Whether grassroots or grass tops, online or big screen, documentary or narrative, independent or “interdependent,” Active Voice uses powerful media—created by preeminent filmmakers—to put human faces on the big issues of our times.
HERE'S HOW:
Full-scale engagement campaigns
We work with media at all stages— from rough cuts through DVD and online
distribution—to heighten impact and increase understanding of the cause or issue addressed. Active Voice’s campaigns start with strategy and include built-in evaluation and high-profile events that lead to nationwide partnerships and sustained support.

The Active Voice Lab develops new models for creating, “street testing” and leveraging social-issue media. Many “experiments” bubble up from our own work, but you too can bring projects to the Lab.
Projects include:
The Prenups
What should filmmakers and funders talk about before they “tie the knot”? The Prenups offer guidelines to improve communications and collaborations among filmmakers, funders, strategists and advocates—and help avoid the pitfalls that come with unmanaged expectations and incomplete understanding. Global Lives
By 2010, more than 13% of the U.S. population will be foreign born. That’s why, since 2003, Active Voice has been curating a series of powerful narratives—including dozens of documentaries, a feature film, a TV movie and a museum exhibit—and developing discussion resources that help communities address issues of immigration.
Beyond the Choir
Some films tap into human values that transcend “red vs. blue,” “urban vs. rural” and other divides. Beyond the Choir is a process that offers resources and support for filmmakers who want to engage—rather than dismiss—hard-to-reach audiences.

Active Voice Consulting offers research, strategic planning, concept design and intermediary services to foundations, producers and nonprofits. We bring more than two decades of practitioner experience to the challenges faced by social media entrepreneurs today.
Active Voice’s clients and consulting assignments come in a variety of complex shapes and forms.
Here are a few examples:
The BeCause Foundation
Active Voice has provided a host of strategic and planning services to this new hybrid of philanthropy, filmmaking and social innovation.
The Skoll Foundation
We helped the Skoll Foundation explore approaches to media grantmaking that would support the growing social entrepreneurship movement.
Grantmakers Concerned with Immigrants and Refugees (GCIR)
Films about immigrants can help leaders make informed decisions about services and policies. Active Voice works with GCIR to integrate these stories into workshops, toolkits and funder events.
Center for Asian American Media (CAAM)
CAAM asked Active Voice to help strengthen relationships between Asian American audiences and the public television system. We developed a plan to meet their goals.
National Center for Media Engagement
Active Voice helped this public media agency spot national-programming and production trends across multiple platforms.
Interdependent collaborations
Our expert staff works as intermediaries to foster healthy collaborations among
filmmakers, funders, strategists and advocates.
