The House I Live In

An unflinching examination by filmmaker Eugene Jarecki, The House I Live In explores the devastating effects that America’s "War on Drugs" has had on poor and minority communities and its implications for the future of American society. With a premiere at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2012, Active Voice is developing strategies to help this hard-hitting film inspire conversation about the war on drugs and move local and national drug policy.

Gaining Ground

Surrounded by foreclosures, how is it possible that so many homeowners in Boston’s Dudley Street neighborhood have held on to their homes? Gaining Ground–executive produced by Mark Lipman and Leah Mahan, directed by Vital Pictures–follows residents who have taken back their once blighted neighborhood and are turning it around despite enormous challenges. The upcoming documentary is part of Active Voice’s experimental “Story & Policy” project, funded by the MacArthur Foundation.

The Equal Voice Youth Empowerment Project

Active Voice is working with the Marguerite Casey Foundation's Equal Voice Youth Empowerment Project to inspire young people and give them the tools to identify the issues that mean the most to them and their families. The centerpiece of the project, Maria Full of Hope, is a short documentary adapted from Raising Hope: The Equal Voice Story, which depicts one woman’s journey to self-discovery as she reflects on her challenging past, joins a community organization and becomes an inspiring youth leader battling the dropout crisis in Chicago.
