AV Lab worked with Cal Humanities, a partner of the National Endowment for the Humanities, to examine how they could best advance stories and spaces for critical questioning and knowledge building, and to compare where their work as a funder sits on a continuum of investments in story-rich media. AV Lab interviewed Cal Humanities grantees about how they connect with audiences, and then we created a Compass for program staff to map out new directions for community engagement.
The Compass helped us address a question that has implications for philanthropy more broadly: Can and should funders clarify the kind of change they hope their media grants will contribute to? And if so, what are some steps they can take to get there?
